Do first impressions still matter?

You know the saying: you never get a second chance to make a first impression. And while that still may be technically true, in today's short-attention-span, constantly-reinventing-ourselves (see: Lady Gaga, Johnny Depp) world, there's kind of no such thing as a first impression any more. 

I've been contemplating this because sometimes I see that my clients—and myself for that matter—hesitate to put themselves out into the world for fear that the thing they want to share isn't perfect. So instead of throwing a few things out to see what resonates, they wait. And wait. And wait. It begs the question: Is it wanting to make a good first impression? Or is it perfectionism in disguise? 

It doesn't matter, really. In the end the result is the same: if you don't put yourself out there, there's a 100% chance that you will make no impression at all. 

So if you've been hesitating on something, I encourage you to make a move now, knowing you can tweak and improve along the way. No one's going to judge (they're too busy thinking about their own business!). For example, if you've been waiting to launch the perfect website, why not put up a simple, beautiful splash page with your core branding message and a way for people to get in touch? Announce it on LinkedIn with pride! Then when your full site's ready, it's another chance to (re)introduce yourself.
